MESSAGE FROM OT MALAYSIA PRESIDENT

It gives me a great pleasure to welcome all delegates to this auspicious scientific meeting. OT Malaysia is indeed very glad to be invited by Malaysia Healthy Aging Society to organise this event.

Quality of Life After Stroke has deeper in meaning for Occupational Therapists. We view QOL of individual as having an ability to perform or participate in three main areas: Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Work and Leisure.

Medical-Central.org - Occupational Therapy
(1022 Reads)
Update Occupational Therapists help people to improve their daily lives. They help improve their ability to perform tasks at home and at work that are usually taken for granted until you lose the ability to do them. OT's work with individuals who have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally or emotionally disabling. Sometimes work involves assistance with motor skills and sometimes it is more tasks like using a computer or cooking. Sometimes it involves things as simple as bathing or eating. OT's cover a lot of ground.

Using your hands in a BIT
(973 Reads)
Update Bilateral Isokinematic Training (BIT) is used for upper limb rehabilitation in stroke patients and is based on the theory that therapy for stroke patients needs to be directed at the central nervous system because it is the brain that is damaged by a stroke, not the muscles.

PUT two identical glasses in front of you. Now, pick up one glass in each hand and observe how your hands are positioned around the glasses.

“See how your hands look the same, each side?” occupational therapist Sue Cotton points out. She refers to this as the mirror image, with “the strong hand providing the mirror image for the weak hand.”

This mirror image concept is the basis for a technique, known as Bilateral Isokinematic Training (BIT), used for upper limb rehabilitation in stroke patients.

Quite simply, BIT trains the stroke patient to use both hands in the same way, simultaneously but separately (“bilateral” = both sides, “iso” = equal/same, “kinematic” = same movement of both upper limbs simultaneously).
